Metering Guidelines

Preparing Mail To Be Metered

Special note:  For mailing over 50 pieces, please contact us a day in advance to ensure that we can meet your schedule.

For regular out going mail please be sure that you have prepared your mail-to-be-metered as follows:

  • Place all mail-to-be-metered in a separate tub from campus mail.
  • Securely rubber-band or clip each outgoing bundle together to prevent mail from your department and/or account number from being separated en route.

Divide and sort all outgoing USPS mail as follows:

  • Separate mail by class and by weight when the contents are known to vary.
  • Mixed categories and classes may be in the same bundle, provided they are physically separated and marked.

Domestic: All mail should be sorted and banded separately by:

  • Window envelopes
  • Hand-written address envelopes
  • Typed address envelopes

International: International mail should be sorted into the following categories:

  • Mail addressed to Canada
  • Mail addressed to Mexico
  • Mail addressed to all other international locations

International Mail & Customs Forms

All international mail weighing 16 ounces or more, and all potentially dutiable items, regardless of weight, require the applicable customs forms. Customs forms are available at no charge at all US Post Offices, the PostMarket on campus, or by contacting Cornell Mail Services.

Mail Services Release Form

A mail release form must be attached to each bundle of outgoing mail. Forms are available from Cornell Mail Services.
